The Vancouver City Council's decision to ban the sale of Viagra has been backed by Health Canada. The council is due to hear back from Health Canada's Health Sciences Board (HSB).
This is the first time the council has taken a hard stance on the issue.
In June, HSB's vice-chairman, Dr John O'Leary, said the council had voted in favour of a ban on the sale of Viagra.
“The council unanimously voted in favour of this decision,” Dr O’Leary said.
“The council voted in favour of the decision to ban the sale of Viagra on July 25th,” he added.
“While we are aware that the council’s stance on Viagra is very different from our stance on the sale of other medicines, we have also taken an honest stance in favour of a ban on Viagra. We are concerned that a ban on Viagra could lead to serious health consequences and that is why we need to act now,” Dr O’Leary said.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg, and if the council’s position is that Viagra should be used only under a doctor’s supervision, then it would be wrong and we are disappointed in the council’s position.”
This is the first time Health Canada and the council have spoken in favour of a ban on Viagra. Health Canada’s health regulatory agency has asked Health Sciences Board for permission to suspend sales of the drug over the ban.
“All health products produced in Canada are not subject to the same safety standards as other countries,” Health Sciences Board Secretary David Karpas said on June 8.
“In order to protect Canadians from harmful and dangerous products, we will continue to work with the FDA to provide regulatory oversight to all Canadians, including those in Canada.”
Health Canada will be in a different position next week to decide whether to ban the sale of Viagra.
